SHELLRAISER
We’re making it official!

Seaweed Society are rejoicing in finding our new clubhouse and we’d like you to join us!

With La Niña on her way, we’re moving our activities indoors and SHELLRAISER is our launch event, our first to take place in our gorgeous new digs in Mermaid Beach.

We’re celebrating with a little opening shindig, including:

  • Welcoming words by Rick Roser, Aboriginal artist and seaweed appreciator
  • Shell identification workshop – “Top 3 Shells” – with Jenni “Gingerlily” Schultz
  • Cooking with Makiko – seaweed recipes presented by Makiko Yamamoto
  • Reading by Sue Reid on seabed mining – ‘Solwara 1 and the Sessile Ones’
  • Electronic sea shanties by Danni Zuvela
  • Launch of our ‘Gold Coast Seaweed Companion’ seaweed identification project and seaweed drawing activities
  • Seaweed seedballs giveaway!

Bring along your shells for our shell detectives to get to work! We’ll be discussing all things marine ecology, starting with the fascinating world of shells, through marine organisms large and small, and circling back to seaweed and its worlds here on the Gold Coast.

If you’re interested in a low-key community gathering exploring sea creatures and our local oceanic environment – or if you just have questions about seaweed – this is for you!

We’ll provide our collective wisdom, community memory, packaged seaweed snacks, banter and hand sanitiser. Please don’t come in if you’re displaying covid symptoms, but otherwise all are welcome to join us on this momentous next step in our sea-loving journey together.

This is an open, informal, all-ages, all-inclusive event. Seating, accessible toilets available. Limited parking available at venue and on Ventura Street.

The CWA Mermaid Hall is wheelchair accessible. Guide dogs and carers are welcome. This event features tactiile discovery and is ideal for people with low vision and visual impairment. Please contact us if you have any other access needs or queries and we’d love to accommodate you.

COST: Free; donations are welcome
WHERE: Queensland Country Women’s Association Hall, 43 Ventura Street, Mermaid Beach. Map reference here.
WHEN: Sunday 1 November, 2020, 4-6pm.

The Seaweed Society is a Gold Coast-based community organisation of artists, performers, scientists,
foragers, ocean-lovers, beach-cleaners and dreamers who are dedicated to experimental practice with seaweed.

With thanks to Jan Woolmer and the lovely CWA Mermaids for letting us use this gorgeous hall space.

The Seaweed Society meets monthly on the full moon. Check our website and Instagram @sseaweed_society for details and updates on our events.
